Three curved walls face one another, built from reclaimed wood and empty wine bottles, lit from within by LED technology, and topped by a solid wood slab. The result is architecture that organizes experience through opposition—generating flows and pauses from contrasting spatial conditions. The pavilion's logic finds an unexpected echo in the practice of Lara Almarcegui, herself born in Zaragoza, whose work has spent three decades quantifying and exposing the raw material substrate of the built environment — piling construction rubble into exhibition halls, cataloging wastelands, calculating the matter displaced by demolition. Both practices refuse to let material remain invisible: where Almarcegui's installations diagnose a building's material afterlife by returning it to its constituent mass, the pavilion works in reverse, assembling discarded matter into a functioning architecture that still declares its material origin. Hers is archival; the pavilion's is generative — proposing what discarded matter can still become. The pavilion's aesthetic groundwork opens a dialogue between material and construction, accumulation and energy, space and the time of the ephemeral. Conceived as a temporary, nomadic structure — today surviving only as archive — it expresses, through contrasts, a shift in collective sensibility: neighborhood against mass, low-tech against high-tech, the tactile against the visual. It foregrounds the energetic effort embedded in matter, staging a permeability between the categories of engineer and bricoleur — pointing to the architect's responsibility to select, deliberately, a We live in a world where lower coastal regions face drastic weather patterns, sea levels rise, and the spread of malaria and dengue increases. Natural disasters amplify inequality among people and their landscapes. The Anthropocene also shapes a world where environment, economy, and politics intertwine. Consider Greater Houston, especially Baytown, under a dystopian—yet very near—future scenario: a Category 1 storm like Hurricane Beryl making landfall on July 8, 2024, causing a blackout lasting 2-3 weeks, combined with a wet bulb temperature of 42°C and a dew point of 35°C under a burning sun over flooded areas. Still, you know how to manage your meso-environment; you have learned to cultivate your garden and shelter yourself against "Hell and High Water." The Hell 'and' High-Water House (H&amp;HWH) transforms the phrase "hell or high water"—which defies nature—into a goal of living in alliance with nature despite impending natural shocks.As environmental disasters increase, insurance companies are reducing their presence in disaster-prone areas or raising premiums, challenging property owners by denying home coverage or increasing prices by up to 27% (such as in Texas from 2022 to 2023), followed by banks declining loans. These companies often show a lack of clear standards about resilient architectural features, burdening consumers with higher deductibles, excluding risks like hail and wind, and offering less comprehensive coverage for rebuilding. Some areas are more vulnerable to tropical storms and flooding within Greater Houston than others. While Houston's downtown has an average elevation of 50 feet above sea level, Baytown is at a maximum of 34 feet, with its coast designated as a special flood hazard area. This situation intertwines politics, economics, and the environment, turning climate change into a matter affecting domestic finances. While society faces challenges from tropical climate threats, wealth secures uplands, power, and vaccines. As societies resist hail and high water, what type of architecture results from the mediation between Earth's disturbed systems and human needs—what we call here 'Gaia Device' scores high in avoiding insurance penalties, allowing the economy to flow smoothly between banks, property owners, and the Anthropocene landscape of the Hail and High-Water house.A breathable pyramidal undulating skin, in which mosquito repellent, shading, and climbing jasmine, lavender, citronella geraniums, catnip, lemongrass, ageratum, horsemint, marigold, and basil grow, tempers the inner rooms by combining ventilation and convection effects driven by thermal radiation differences and prevailing wind frequencies. The skin presses east and west while spanning north and south, redirecting low-speed dominant wind frequencies to circulate upward within the skin's interior. The temperature drops to 10 °C on the ground floor before air flows to the upper levels, speeding up and cooling further before reaching the open rooftop garden, where the air smells of jasmine, mosquitoes never arrive, and residents harvest vegetables and aromatic herbs. A series of designated wet-bulb zones on the floodable ground floor—equipped with clay cisterns and filled with floodwater—are located beneath the skin's shade, where temperature decreases due to accelerated convection—if the water level is high, the speed increases because of the Venturi effect. The modular structure is built from overlapping truck-length industrial modules covered in mirror-like steel to maximize reflected light inside. The curved surfaces increase the structure's strength, protecting it against hazardous materials from hurricanes, tornadoes, or hail. In this sense, a house can be conceptualized as a Gaia device: it is an interface between the body and the politics of extraction as it multiplies the ways in which the individual takes agency in the construction of the planet. 2/ The air we exhale in our living rooms and gardens “will soon be a thousand miles away, on a flood plain in Bangladesh, in another man’s lungs.”&nbsp; In this sense, our exhalations are agents of climate change. Beneath the ocean of air, domestic life is influenced by the complex materiality of the terrestrial atmosphere – a common vector that literally and materially dissolves the limits of one scale into another. 3/ Beyond breathing, at the core of the domestic scale, aspects of the world, the territory, and the cosmos are deeply entangled. Critically, the domestic is the scale for assemblages of ecosystems that allow humans and nonhumans to develop a politics of cohabitation and collaboration. On that scale, the individual comes to know the collective, the land and the territory, the world and the cosmos. 4/ The domestic scale breaks dichotomies between the macro and the micro by channeling a continuous flow of materiality – of goods, food, energy, water, waste, and air. It is a reflective scale in which we assemble and are assembled, materially and biologically. Tasked with creating a modular housing system for affected residents, the project integrates the concept of “Gaia Devices,” emphasizing Earth System stewardship through reduced material mobilization, enhanced recyclability, and minimized emissions.The proposal outlines a multi-faceted approach to CO2 emission reductions across several stages. Firstly, the con-struction process leverages industrialized techniques that allow for 100% assembly of modular units in a centralized location, significantly cutting transportation and labor-relat-ed emissions by an estimated 43% compared to conventional methods. Secondly, the building’s design incorporates a multilayered facade and garden rooftop, optimizing thermal efficiency and comfort through passive climate control, tai-lored to seasonal variations.In terms of end-of-life sustainability, all materials are de-signed for reuse, transforming the building into a resource reservoir for future construction, thus reducing emissions associated with material disposal.Central to the project’s vision is the creation of communi-ty-centric spaces. It tasked developers with creating proposals resulting in a modular system for affordable houses, facilitating the smooth relocation of its affected residents. Z4A Architects answered the call by developing “The Irritable House.” Nestled in the southwest suburbs of Madrid, this innovative project represents a paradigm shift in affordable housing thanks to its cutting-edge modular construction. By exploring the possibility of synthesizing multiple construction options within one design, the concept aims to apply its experience to larger multi-floor buildings. Key to this initiative is the quest to reduce construction time and costs through an industrialized process. The proposal promises a more efficient and cost-effective approach to housing construction by streamlining house assembly with minimal maneuvers and simplified details. The irritable house is named after its skin’s capacity being adaptable to the surrounding environments. and oxygen wells, self-regulated by natural grass archives and the ecosystems they support. It is placed at the landscape of the south of Monte del El Pardo, where extensive suburbanization on land and meadows has eradicated the ecosystem of natural grasses in exchange for asphalt extensions and monospecies herbaceous patches. To maintain the monospecies lawns, these patches are fumigated with glyphosate-based herbicides. This toxified ecological simplification displaces thousands of insects and herb types that keep food webs in balance while providing the nutrition of approximately a third of the species of birds, reptiles, amphibians, and bats equally necessary for this ecosystem stewardship. Acting as a guerrilla gardening project, this archive is a point of resistance against monochrome gardening and its ecosystem impacts. The garden releases pollen, seeds, and spores that travel through the air or attach to flying insects to replicate in the surrounding environment. The natural grass archive as the carbon sink of the house is entangled with the growth of its companion multispecies communities of macro and microscopic life forms: arachnids, myriapods, and hexapods Enclosed by an ultralight membrane, and shaped by chaotic but invisible airflows, the low-pressure pneumatic structure visualizes our ever-changing atmosphere. Its membrane shifts around a body of encapsulated air, producing mesmerizing forms as regions of low and high pressure circulate within, suggesting an ecology of air. The installation introduces an internal, moody weather to the core of the postmodern atrium of the University of Houston Gerald D. Hines College of Architecture and Design. Here, light is reflected throughout the interior environment by the work’s transformations. This body of air becomes dynamic due to the winds, introduced by fans, that lift the fabric surface up, matched with the countermovement of the air mass due to gravity. Challenging the stability of symmetric, spherical forms favored by gases, Airscapes #1 instead relates more to inflatables. It occupies the threshold between pressurized pneumatics and material deformations under wind currents—it is both stable and unstable. Prior to its realization, the project’s ideas were developed through two parallel drawing series: Static and Dynamic. In both, elements of inflation, deflation, internal air volume, external airspeed, turbulences, fabric elasticity, flexibility, and permeability were iterated to generate an extensive field of forms. The Static exploration searches for form in response to the atrium, in addition to seeking a desired aesthetic of slick and continuous materiality. In this series, one detects the fascination for the smoothness of a mass without gravity. The Dynamic research begins from pneumatic logic. In this series, one understands the phenomena produced by forces and processes acting within a field of lightness, which were ultimately given a material form, enabled by digital tools. Drawings from each series, seen on the following pages, are distinct in their natures and thought processes. Lead by Rafael B Duran and Victor Cano Unit 6 took a journey from ‘Big London’ to ‘b London’ to emphasize affection, atmosphere, body and instability—not the stable objects and forms so often associated with architectural production. A wide range of cultures, peoples, and customs from regions across the world shape the ‘b London’ experience gathered in the Elephant and Castle district. ‘b London’ is always under construction, it is synonymous with eccentricity, and it refuses any power from the centre. Elephant and Castle is literally and figuratively outside of ‘Big London’ being the model for Peepshow architecture; architecture based on untouchable elements without objects where the most important target has been to narrate the architectural production from cartographies or performances to interviews and movies. This helps to understand space through affections and not only through Cartesian conditions, enhancing the meaning of architecture itself and showing a new complex reality difficult to depict because of immaterial things that were revealed: market movements, little histories, immigration policies, new spatial possibilities or genetic combinations. To represent this reality at the AA, Unit 6 built a 1:1 scale Peepshow whose principle element was a 2000mm x 1500mm x 4mm spy mirror where gravity and rational displacements are lost and the current world appears to be formed by intimacy, eroticism, overlap, reflections and desires caught up in an instant. In this way, Unit 6 introduces ‘Peepshow London’ as a critical construction against stability in architecture. Instructors- Rafael B. It was once a quarry of the clays that today covers the roof of the city of Huesca. It is now the opportunity to constitute a guarantor of the local biome: herbaceous of the Hoya de Huesca, almond trees and insects that together with the political and mythological history of the place resolve, in a heterogeneous body, an island in the center of Huesca, a city of low density and slow evolution, emblem of an Empty SpainThe hill's isolation is reinforced by its high and steep condition that rests on a plane where lines of crushed concrete demolition were collected, waiting to be the roads' mantle to the Sierra de Guara.Inside the hill, a temple is dedicated to the Martyrs Nunilo and Alodia, a desecrated cemetery covered with grasses. There is a dry and robust wall to the south of the temple, already in ruins, where 532 republican victims of the Spanish Civil War were killed and buried. The monument is a set of pyramids: one falsely excavated resolved by accumulations of vegetal mantle against gabions around the unexhumed mass grave, the other erected on top of the witness hill: each victim a duplicate stone above and below. The management plan proposes constructing a local biotope, a biome as a genetic guarantor, biological and political, ethical or mineral: a reserve, the forest as the future of civilization.
